Tien's journey: from oppression to joy

Born in 1968 in Singapore, I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian family in which I was given the sex/gender marker of female/girl. For decades, first in Singapore and then in Canada, I internalized my experience of family violence, sexism, homophobia, racism, and trans- and gender-phobia. Eventually falling into a major depression, I thought suicide was the answer. It was not; the attempt failed.

When I awoke the next day, I took it as a sign and made a commitment to myself to transform my struggles into something else. Over the next few years, I focused on my spiritual and personal development, which completely changed my perspective on life. Instead of feeling oppressed, I discovered a newfound joy and love for life. This transformation has given me a unique insight and ability to guide others in accessing their own freedom, choice, and connection with the world.

Trans and gender awareness

I am the first Asian transman to publicly transition during a time when LGBTQ awareness was rare (in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2001). As a trailblazing figure in the trans community, my dedication to enlightenment has driven me to continually evolve, challenge established norms, and lead meaningful new conversations and practices that push the boundaries of gender.

Tien's Curriculum

My Transcending Gender curriculum encompasses a range of topics, including Heartfelt Conversations About Gender, Upgrade Your Gender IQ and Gender Conscious Parenting. Additionally, I offer insightful programs on Race and Spirituality, as well as Mindfulness. Beyond my educational endeavours, I am also an accomplished Goldsmith, artist, alchemist, and pole dancer and drag performer. I am grateful to currently reside in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples.

Why should I take this workshop?

Gender is a big topic at the moment. When we can understand it from a new perspective we are liberated from the boundaries that restrict us from connecting soul to soul. Can you remember a time in which your gender has stopped you from being fully free? Being a racialized person who has lived as both genders, my experience is unique and it allows my teaching to be socially relatable, accessible and relevant.

People who are looking for a deeper understanding of gender issues, LGBTQ2S+ allies, trans and non-binary folks who are seeking clarity and guidance, parents who want to support their children outside of gender norms, and companies that are looking to responsibly "do the work" around gender diversity and equity.

Yes! I have a workshop that trains foundational gender inclusivity and takes you into the best practices and philosophies to adapt to your daily life and work environment to ensure heartfelt relationships in a professional place.
